A nine-story former seed company building converted to working artist studios. Hundreds of painters, printmakers, sculptors, and ceramicists with open hours on First Thursdays and the full open-studio chaos of Art-A-Whirl in May. The closest the metro gets to a vertical art district.
An artist-run gallery and gathering space at Northrup King with rotating exhibitions, performances, and a residency program. Programming centers BIPOC and queer artists across painting, sculpture, performance, and new media. Open Thursday evenings and Saturdays.
Formerly Kolman & Pryor, the gallery is now in its 15th year showcasing abstract and contemporary work by Minnesota artists. Hosts an annual Project Space Grant for emerging artists. Located on the third floor of Northrup King.
A contemporary gallery founded in 2021 by Rebecca Heidenberg and Gregory Smith, paired with a standalone cinema and an artist residency. Programming emphasizes intergenerational, female-identified, and under-recognized artists.
A nonprofit exhibition space on Marshall Street with a serious contemporary program and a research library of art books and journals, both free and open to the public. One of the few galleries in the country where you can see the show, then sit down and read everything about the artist. Wednesday through Saturday.
Art advisor Rob Sherer’s exhibition space in the back of the old Carter-Day building, built on a smart idea: invite galleries from New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago to mount shows here. Since 2021 that has meant dozens of exhibitions you would otherwise have to fly to see, with collaborators at the level of Perrotin and Jessica Silverman.
Painter Nicholas Harper’s gallery since 1999, now on 13th Avenue in the Arts District after years on East Hennepin. Harper’s own gilded, long-necked figures hang alongside local and international artists working the wondrously dark end of the spectrum, and the gallery hosts the Twin Cities Death Cafe on the last Sunday of each month.
